Meet Gary…

Gary Russell, MA, LPC Intern

Supervised by Dr. Chris Stravitsch, DMin, LPC-S, LMFT-S

Gary is a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern, supervised by Dr. Chris Stravitsch, DMin, LPC-S, LMFT-S. He completed a Master of Arts in Counseling at Houston Baptist University and gained professional counseling experience in a Christian-based practice setting as well as Rejoice Counseling’s Practicum & Internship Student Program. In counseling, Gary addresses depression, anxiety, self-esteem, relationships, addictions, emotional abuse, marital healing and enrichment, divorce distress and recovery, parenting, and authentic masculinity from a Catholic perspective. He works with adults, youth, couples, and families.

Gary has several years of experience in various spiritual and emotional leadership mentoring roles with various organizations, as well as experience facilitating men’s addiction recovery groups. These have included The Mankind Project, That Man Is You men’s spiritual leadership program, and Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center where he serves on the Advisory Board.

Gary’s theoretical approach in counseling is informed by principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Choice Theory and Reality Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), along with a strong foundation in the Catholic faith. He works collaboratively with clients to help them achieve mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual health. He believes the singular reason we all exist is simply to love and support others. And the more we can align with that core purpose, the happier and more joy-filled our life can be.

Gary counsels from those foundational principles with the intention to help people heal from past traumas, resolve distressing emotions, connect with their true purpose, and ultimately experience genuine peace, joy, and happiness in their lives.

Gary is originally from the New Orleans area and has lived most of his adult life in Houston. He previously earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tulane University (1990) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Finance from the University of Houston (1996). Prior to following God’s calling to a counseling career, Gary enjoyed a successful 30-year career in the energy industry in various positions, including engineering, finance, public communications, and business consulting.

Gary cherishes time with his young son, especially building with Legos and playing sports. He also enjoys swimming, biking, running, and connecting with friends. He is an active parishioner at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Houston.
