Meet Gary…

Gary Russell, Parish Counseling Associate

Supervised by Dr. Chris Stravitsch, DMin, LPC-S, LMFT-S

Gary is a Parish Counseling Associate who recently completed a Master of Arts in Counseling at Houston Baptist University and has applied to become an LPC Intern in Texas. He gained professional counseling experience in our Practicum & Internship Student Program from January-August 2019 and will continue to serve on our parish counseling team. He receives supervision from Dr. Chris Stravitsch, DMin, LPC-S, LMFT-S. In counseling, Gary can address depression, anxiety, self-esteem, relationships, addictions, emotional abuse, divorce trauma and recovery, parenting, and authentic masculinity from a Christian perspective. He works with adults, couples, and families.

Gary has several years of experience in various spiritual and emotional leadership mentoring roles with various organizations, as well as experience facilitating men’s addiction recovery groups. These have included The Mankind Project, That Man Is Youmen’s spiritual leadership program, and Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center where he serves on the Advisory Board.

Gary’s theoretical approach in counseling is informed by principles of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Choice Theory and Reality Therapy, Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), along with a strong foundation in the Catholic faith. He works collaboratively with clients to help them achieve mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual health. He believes the singular reason we all exist is simply to love and support others. And the more we can live in alignment with that core purpose, the happier and more joy-filled our life can be.

Gary counsels from those foundational principles with the intention to help people heal from past traumas, resolve distressing emotions, connect with their true purpose, and ultimately experience genuine peace, joy, and happiness in their lives.

Gary is originally from the New Orleans area and has lived most of his adult life in Houston. He previously earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tulane University (1990) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Finance from the University of Houston (1996). Along with his nearly 30-year engineering, finance, and public communications career in the energy industry, Gary has developed a passion for helping others achieve their own personal fulfillment and has felt called by God to change careers to become a professional counselor.

Gary cherishes time with his young son, especially building with Legos and playing sports. He also enjoys swimming, biking, running, and connecting with friends. He is an active parishioner at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Houston.
