Meet Jennifer…

Jennifer Walcik, Practicum Student

Site Supervisor: Dr. Larry Freeney, PhD, LPC

Jennifer is a graduate student at the University of St. Thomas pursuing a degree in Clinical Mental Health and Counseling and is supervised by Dr. Larry Freeney, PhD, LPC. She also holds a Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of St. Thomas with a focus on cognitive development. She is a former middle school teacher having taught in both charter schools and Catholic schools for the past 11 years. Her experience in education inspired her to transition into the mental health field. She believes social and emotional learning are an integral part of the academic experience, especially in the adolescent years. She would like to continue to work with adolescents by helping them develop a positive self-image and healthy emotional regulation. In addition to her experience in education, she is accredited in various levels of Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. She taught these classes at two residential treatment programs for women in the Houston area. The program focuses on using CBT techniques to promote effective communication and build healthy relationships with our children. Jennifer’s passion for working with parents comes from being one. Her faith and love for Jesus Christ has grounded her in the journey through motherhood, with all its joy and challenges. Jennifer became Catholic through the RCIA process and embraced her Catholic faith while guiding and watching her children grow in theirs. Prayer has been a constant and reliable tool. Jennifer and her family are members of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. When Jennifer is not studying, she enjoys traveling, gardening, and reading a good book.
