Meet Melissa…

Melissa Abraham, LMSW, Parish Counselor

Supervised by Janet Sturtz, MA, MSW, LCSW-S

Melissa Abraham is a Licensed Master Social Worker who receives counseling supervision from Janet Sturtz, MA, MSW, LCSW-S. Melissa’s journey into counseling began after completing undergraduate studies in Nutrition at the University of Houston and a year of mission work. During her mission work, she saw the Church was thirsting for a greater integration of Faith and Mental Health and she felt called to respond. She returned to Texas to complete a Masters in Social Work at Baylor University specializing in clinical social work.

During her time at Baylor she worked as an intern with women in a residential facility struggling with addiction and homelessness. She worked one on one with them to gain appropriate skills to aid in their sobriety and continue on their journey to independence and freedom. She also had the opportunity to lead group classes to provide psychoeducation in different areas such as coping skills, emotions, triggers and family history. She also has experience in working with individuals that struggle with grief, anxiety and depression.

Melissa has devoted her life to the Service of the Church, serving actively in Youth Ministry and frequently sharing across the country on formation, femininity, mental health, and her encounter with Jesus. She and her husband are a part of Jesus Youth, an ecclesial movement of the Church.

In her relaxed free time, Melissa is either sipping a coffee while working on her art, exploring new recipes, finding ways to make spaces beautiful, or exploring Houston.
